Peg Duthie - Sayers and Rowling

Notes on my Sayers-Rowling projects

I'm a fan of Dorothy L. Sayers's Lord Peter Wimsey novels and J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, and one of my newer hobbies has been encouraging people who are fond of one to take a look at the other (or, in some cases, to introduce both authors to the hapless victim interested party).

During March and April 2007, I taught a six-week seminar on Sayers and Rowling for Retirement Learning at Vanderbilt. These are the handouts I pulled together for the class. (Caveat: they may not make much sense on their own, but I'm posting them both for the students who missed a session and for some friends who've been discussing Sayers and Rowling with me elsewhere).

  • Before the class: a list of the novels and some resources [html]

  • Handout 1: "Some places to look for more about Lord Peter Wimsey" and a list of upcoming HP and DLS conferences
  • [Word doc]
  • Handout 2: Fanfiction recommendations; more about censorship and sales
  • [Word doc]
  • The Wimsey family tree (according to The Lord Peter Wimsey Companion) [TIF]
  • On the back of the family tree: links to The Mind of the Maker and Portus 2008 (another HP conference)

  • Handout 4: Creative trinities and other structural thoughts; some quotes from Rowling and Sayers to ponder
  • [PowerPoint]

At Lumos 2006, I presented a poster on Sayers and Rowling; my notes for the conference proceedings are here.
